Literature Review

Literature Review

What is Literature?
=> According to me Literature shows reality to us. Literature lives in experience of people. In society people have their own different perspectives. And whatever they experience it comes in form of words. And it becomes content of literature. Sometimes, some based on imagination, but most of it based on people. So according to me Literature, becomes medium to connects with many people.

=> How Literature shaped me?
  I choose English as a main subject in B. A. At that time, I have no any idea about literature. For me Literature word is completely new. And slowly, slowly journey starts and different different story came. Literature gives space to you. Whenever In a new place it becomes difficult for some days. I also felt loneliness, and then slowly slowly I get company of friends. And I also like Moby-Dick, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Because in both struggle is there. And another is All My son, Tughlaq. So In one way literature hapls you and gives company, and other way it also shows some bitter reality, sometimes it becomes difficult, but it's shows what as it is.

I also involves in this and find connection. And It's give me company. And Iike novel, short story, play. And This journey gives me a lot of things.

Metaphor :-
River and Train

I give two Metaphor to literature. Explanation :- I gives River metaphor to Literature. Because life journey is like flow. In our life also new changes came and we also learn new things. River passes through different palaces. Same our life passes through different experience. some are bad or some are good. And River brings freshness wherever it passed. Same new literature brings freshness and it changes our life.

We aslo learn through our bad experience. For success in life, hard work is necessary, but some tricks is important, Balram also uses some tricks.

(1) Feminist reading of Harmione’s character in Harry Potter: How do the character portrayal of Harmione and other female characters support feminist discourse?
=>  In Harry Potter, Harry is main protagonist. And Ron and Hermione is best friends of Harry. Harry get some task in all the series. Hermione and Ron helps him. And other chracters also helps Harry. so In the Harry Potter Hermione's chracter is powerful. Ans she loves reading. And she also destroys one Horkruks. but in some way her chracter becomes weak. At the end harry completes all the tasks. that's why harry becomes center in the text.

(2) Discourse on the purity of Blood and Harry Potter: How do the novels play with the thesis of pure blood (Master Race) giving an anti-thesis by belonging protagonists to half-blood / Mud-blood? What sort of synthesis is sought in this discourse in Harry Potter series?
=> In Haeey potter there is a discourse of Purity and mud blood is there. Mud blood also get admission in the Hogward. And that's why Volemort does not like Mud Blood. he is aggainst mud bloood. So in harrypotter mud blood suffers. and hermione also suffeers. Bellatrix tortures on her.

3)      Confronting reality by reading fantasy: How does reading Harry Potter make us confront the reality of our everyday existence?
=>  In  Harry potter fantasy and imagination is there. But In this reality is also there. In all the parts chracters struggles like, real life people also suffers and struggle.Ans in the harry potter series also gives some lesson about life. So it is a mixure of fantacy and reality.

4)      Self-Help culture and Harry Potter: How does it stand by an argument that Self-Help Culture serves as a tool of social control: it sooths political unrest . . . one blames oneself for not getting better off is society and remains in one's own pursuit of self-invention, blaming oneself for the failure rather than the systems?
=> Self-Help culture is there in harry potter. It gives life lesson through this it gives mesaagr to reader or audince. Chractrs also fails. And In HARRY POTTER alos power works. And in this there is a fight between good and evil. And political power also works in the harry potter.

5)      The discourse of Power and Politics in Harry Potter: How does Ministry of Magic control the resistance? How do they prosecute the ‘Other’?
=> In Harry Potter power and politics is there. Suddenly the authority is changed and it brings a new rules and regulation in Hogward. And creates many rules. And ministry becomes sticks.

Thinking Activity On The White Tiger

Thinking Activity On The White Tiger

Arvind Adiga is an Indo-Auatralian writer and journalist. His debut novel is "The White Tiger". It was published in 2008 and won the 40th Man Booker Prize in the same year. The novel provides a darkly humorous perspective of India's class struggle in a globalized world as told through a retrospective narration from Balram Halwai, a village boy. Click here to get more information about this Thinking Activity.

* Works :-
1. The White Tiger (2008)
2. Last Man in Tower (2011)
3. Selection Day (2016)
4. Between The Assassinations (2008)

(1). What does writer by saying that somethings are better said in English Language?
=> Sometimes through the English language it becomes easy to give critical comments, language is way to express our thoughts and feelings, so language becomes medium to connects with other people. Different people have their own system of language. And they are connected with that language. That's why sometimes some people does not know some Language. That's language becomes weapon to criticises the condition in indirect way. So English language becomes weapon to fight verbally.

(2). Why do lovers go to the Zoo?
=> In many animals and birds are there. So people came and they looks animals and they enjoys. So Zoo becomes a place, it gives excitement.

(3) How far do you agree with the India represented in the novel The White Tiger?
=> Yes, I agree with India represented in the novel The White Tiger. In novel corruption and poverty is shown. Both are major issues. Novel throws on light. There is two side of India is there, one is dark and one is light. Adiga throws light on dark side of India. Balram leaves his school because of poor condition, he works in tea shop. Poor children's works for their family. Because of poor condition. In India most of the children does not go to school because of poor condition, that's why they work at tea shop, leaves their study, stars earning money. And Balram Halwai also leaves his study, and works in tea shop.

(4) Do you believe that Balram's story is the archetype of all stories of 'rags to riches'?
=> Balram Halwai is a character who leaves his study and works in tea shop. He is belongs to poor family. Later on he works as driver and drives car. And then Pinky madam does incident and blame goes on Balram even he is not on driver seat. Because he is poor blame is goes on him. Later on he kills Ashok and he takes his identity, and become reach. He is good observe. He learns through observation. And he fast observer. And his observing power also helps him. He learns new techniques. And becomes reach. So He belongs to the Archetype of 'rags to riches'.

(5) Language bears within itself the necessity of its own critique, deconstructive criticism aims to show that any text inevitably undermines its own claims to have a determinate meaning, and licences the reader to produce his own meanings out of it by an activity of semantic 'freeplay' (Derrida, 1978, in Lodge, 1988, p. 108). Is it possible to do deconstructive reading of The White Tiger? How?
=> The White Tiger novel throws light on the darkness of India. He talks about India, through a character of Balram. Adiga narrates story with dark humour. He talks about India and also criticise with the use of dark humour. Ashok and pinky madam talks in English language when they want fun. Balram does not know language. That's why pinky madam and Ashok uses English language to justify their status. So Language becomes Stastus for people. Language creates binaries. They feel superiority and Balram feels inferiority. So through the use of language two different perspectives is generates, Ashok and pinky madam both are in power position, they rich and they also know English language. And Balram is driver, he is in marginalised condition, he has no power, he is powerless. And Balram, In his narrative he has no regret, and he himself confessed his crime. So in the story loose stone is there. Through loose stone we deconstruct the text.

(6) With ref to screening of select scenes of Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire in today's class:-
=>
   About Movie Slumdog Millionaire :-

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British Crime drama film that is a loose adaptation of the novel Q&A (2005) by Indian Author Vikas Swarup, telling the story of 18 year old Jamal Malik from the Juhu slums of Mumbai. * Write a blog on similarities between The White Tiger and Slumdog Millionaire. Include following points:-

1. Narrative structure - Wanted Poster # KBC show
=>

In The White Tiger Balram is main character. And In Slumdog Millionaire Jamal is main character. In both story flashback sequence are there. In white tiger Balram writes letter to Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao. He tells his story in letter form. He gives his introduction through the Wanted poster. And In movie also, He is introduced in KBC Show, he is in jail, there is a bleam on him. But every question he goes in past and connection is there. So In both, narrator himself narrates his story. Both the chracters are good observer. Both learn through observation. In The White Tiger Balram tells his story through letter. And In movie Jamal tells his story through question - answer. Questions - answers connected with his life.

2. Indianness
=>

In movie real India is shown. Slum area, condition of poor people is shown in the movie. And movie talks about both the side darkness and light. In movie character also grows in a way, he learns many things. He is poor. And In white tiger adiga also satires through the use of Dark humour. And In the movie condition of poor child is shown, they lives in slums, because of poor condition, they leaves their study and starts working. And that's why in early age for them money becomes first priority, earn for family it becomes more important. And they works, and get money also. Some people, takes children, and they harms children, they make them helpless, and they get money through that child. For them it becomes business. So this situation describes in the movie. And In Balram's story also he is poor, because money crisis, he leaves his school, and he works in tea shop. And in the movie when he gives correct answers of questions, he goes in jail. And to prove innocent, he tells the context of the answer. And then story unfolds through the questions - answers. And In both real, dark side of India is there.

(a) Aramis
(b) Cardinal Richetieu
(c) D' Artagnan

Answer:- (a) Aramis

In this movie question answers becomes central part because every question tells story of Jamal, it unfolds Jamal's life. These questions are enough to, understand the Jamal's life. All questions are in right tune. I don't want to replace any questions, or add any questions.

4. On what grounds can u deconstruct the film with reference to post colonial tools / theories.
=>

This movie is directed by Danny Boyle. He is English Director. Through this movie he represents the real picture of India. In movie Jamal's character growing in different circumstances, and it becomes helpful, it shapes his knowledge. Director shows real picture of India. Slum area is in frame in the movie. And poverty, joblessness there in the movie. These are the issues. In the movie when Jamal becomes Tourists Guide, he earns money from that business. And then one day he does his duty, to give information about place, he came with Foreigners , and then car is empty, people steals the parts of the car. Driver knew the truth, that's why he beats him. At that time, that Foreigners stops him, and saves Jamal. They knew that Jamal also part of them. That's why they gives money, to become different from them, they knew the truth but they become superior, because they know the reality, but they then gives money. At that time also difference is created. Maybe he wants to throws on light on western and Indian value. Maybe He wants creates difference through this narrative. And when Jamal sets in Railway Station, at that time camera moves and focuses on one wall, on that wall there is one name is there "Frederick William Stevens", he is English designer. His most notable design was the railway station Victoria Terminus in Bombay. So camera focus on that wall. Maybe he tries remember, his work. So In the movie Danny Boyle, presents the reality of India in form of movie. But In movie some scenes, creates binaries of superiority and inferiority.

5. Compare with Texture and Treatment of subject content in film and novel.
=> Flim and In the movie Texture and Treatment of subject content represents darkness. And In the movie and novel both character Jamal and Balram are good observer. And both leaves their study. But Balram kills Ashok, but he does not catch by police. But In the movie Jamal does not do any wrong thing, then he is goes in the jail. Balram character also match with, another chracter in the movie is Salim. He also tries to kills Maman. But he also does not catch by the police. In both circumstances becomes helpful to create their own character. So Novel and movie, Danny Boyle and Arvind Adiga both are become successful, to look deep, and describes real picture of India. Novel is open ending. And In the movie everything settled down at the end of the movie. Both have starting and ending is different, but when we put in one archetype like poverty, they are connected in some ways.

Thinking Activity :- The Da Vinci Code

Thinking Activity :-  The Da Vinci Code

Click here to know more about this Thinking Activity.

Daniel Gerhard Brown is an American author best known for his thriller novels including the Robert Langdon novels Angels & Demons (2000), Da Vinci Code (2003), The Lost Symbol (2009), Inferno (2013) and Origin (2017). His novels are treasure hunts that usually take place over a period of 24 hours. They feature recurring themes of Cryptography, art, and Conspiracy theories. His books have been translated into 57 languages and, as of 2012, have sold over 200 million copies. Three of them, Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, and Inferno, have been adapted into films.

The Da Vinci Code is a 2003 mystery thriller novel by Dan Brown. It is Brown's second novel to include the character Robert Langdon, the first was his 2000 novel Angels & Demons. The Da Vinci Code follows "Symbologist", Robert Langdon and "Cryptologist" Sophie Neveu after a murder in the Louvre Museum in Paris causes them to become involved in a battle between the Priory of Sion and Opus Dei over the possibility of Jesus Christ having been a companion to Marry Magdalene.

Genere:-
* Mystery
* Dectective fiction
* Conspiracy fiction
* Thriller

(1) Brown states on his website that his books are not anti-Christian though he is on a 'Constant spiritual journey' himself, and says that his book The Da Vinci Code is simply "an entertaining story that promotes spiritual dicussion and debate" and suggests that the book may be used "as a positive catalyst for introspection and exploration of our faith".
=>  Dan Brown also says that in his works imagination is there. He also said that, this story is for Entertaining. It's not reality. But he writes in a way , that's why some people also believes that it is reality. But it is not reality, it is imagination and creativity of Dan Brown.

(2) You have studied 'Genesis' (The Bible), 'The Paradise Lost' (John Milton) and 'The Da Vinci Code' (Dan Brown). Which of the narrative/s seem/s to be truthful? Whose narrative is convincing to the contemporary young mind?
=> When we compared 'The Paradise Lost' and 'The Da Vinci Code' we find that Da vinci code at that time there is a vast difference. Because in Milton's Paradise Lost, chracter of Eve argues satan and gives logical arguments. So Milton represents chracter of Eve in different way, modern way. And he gives voice to Eve. And In Da vinchi code, Den Brown represents old myth, with his own imagination, through his book Da vinchi code. In imagination he represents character in traditional way. That's why comparison of both narrative according to me The Paradise Lost's narrative is more convincing to the contemporary young mind.

(3) What harm has been done to humanity by the biblical narration or that of Milton’s in The Paradise Lose? What sort of damage does narrative like ‘The Vinci Code’ do to humanity?
=> In Milton's Paradise Lost, Eve argues and she get voice to speak. But In Bible, Eve's chracter is completely different. And she does not get voice to speak. And she easily tempted by satan. She does not argue with satan in Bible. So Milton's perspective is different. He presents his perspective through his book. So his perspective is relevant in today's time. And other perspective of Bible is does not relevant in today's time. And In Da vinchi code myth represents through Den Brown’s imagination. He creates story with Fantasy. That's it becomes difficult to connect. In his book, he presents myth and science. And he tries to connect religion with science and myth, according to me. So he presents story in more traditional way, because in this book Da vinchi code, religion plays important role, myth unfolds in this book. And in Milton's book, Eve argues but at the end she convinced by satan. And at the end satan becomes successful in his intention. So at the end Eve becomes tool of satan. And In Da vinchi code, book Some way religion becomes powerful in comparison of science. So in both the book tradition way becomes powerful. So in today's time this traditional concept creates problem. So sometimes this type of narrative damages humanity.

(4) What difference do you see in the portrayal of 'Ophelia' (Kate Winslet) in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, 'Elizabeth' (Helena Bonham Carter) in Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or 'Hester Prynne' (Demi Moore) in Roland Joffé's The Scarlet Letter' or David Yates's 'Harmione Granger' (Emma Watson) in last four Harry Potter films - and 'Sophie Neuve' (Audrey Tautau) in Ron Howard's The Da Vinci Code? How would justify your answer?
=> These all chracters are important in text. But In comparison of Male characters, they become marginalised in text, in some situation. In Hamlet Ophelia does suicide. Ophelia kill herself emotionally. And In Frankenstein, Elizabeth kills herself, for betterment of people. So her suicide is not emotional but intellectual. And In Hester Prynne, Hester convince her truth, and she does not blame on Dimmesdale. But she confess her truth. And she takes all the responsibility of child. Dimmesdale is also equally responsible, but he does not get punishment. But Hester get punishment. And In Harry Potter, Hermione Granger's chracter is samart, intelligent. And she is book lover. She likes to read book. And she helps harry to slove the mystery in harry potter. But she gives clue and through that clue harry becomes successful to slove the mystery. And Sophie Neuve is also samart
She is a French National Police cryptographer. And she helps Robert Langdon. And but in some situations she becomes weak in comparison of Robert Langdon. So all characters in some situations they become weak in comparison of Male characters in the text.

(5) Have you come across any similar book/movie, which tries to deconstruct accepted notions about Hindu religion or culture and by dismantling it, attempts to reconstruct another possible interpretation of truth?
=>

One Night @ the Call Center is a novel written by Chetan Bhagat and first published in 2005. In this Novel all characters have their own problems. In the One call is came when they are in problem. At that time everybody tells that this is call from God. And after this phone call their life is suddenly changing. And then In this Novel both the chances is there either is a phone call from God or this is a voice of Military Uncle. It's depends on readers mind and their belief system. And According to me this voice is their inner voice, their self-realization.
Hello is a 2008 Indian Hindi thriller film directed by Atul Agnihotri,
The film is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel, One Night @ the Call Center. In the movie same situation is there. And Movie also gives both the interpretation. And it also depends on audience's mind set and their belief system. So In both movie and text, gives space to both the interpretation.

Thinking Activity : Northrop Frye - ritual, myth, and the archetypes of literature

Thinking Activity : Northrop Frye - ritual, myth, and the archetypes of literature

Herman Northrop Frye CC FRSC was a Canadian literary critic and and literary theorist, considered one of the most influential of the 20th century. Frye gained international fame with his first book, Fearful Symmetry, which led to the reinterpretation of the poetry of William Blake.

(1) What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the archetypal critic do?
=>
In literary criticism the term archetype denotes recurrent designs,pattern of action,character-type,themes and images which are identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature,as well as in myths,dreams and even social rituals.
Archetypal critic reads that sines, and try to get meaning and they interpret the menning.

(2)What is Frye trying prove by giving an analogy of ' Physics to Nature' and 'Criticism to Literature'?
=>

 Frye compares human emotions with nature. Nature is also important aspect. Nature have different season, like human beings has a different emotion and feelings. Nature constructs people. Nature also affects human beings. So frye compares human being' s emotions with different season.

Spring

The Spring season represents the Comedy.

Summer

The season of Summer represents Romance.

Autumn

The Autumn season represents Tragedy.

Winter

 The season of Winter represents Satire.

(3) Share your views of Criticism as an organised body of knowledge. Mention relation of literature with history and philosophy.

=> History is very important to know the present situation, because through the historical lenses we observe the situation and we compares with past. And we get some glimpses, so it becomes helpful and we also compare with present time. And philosophy is also another important aspects. Philosophy also becomes helpful to understands the past. People have different motives, and different perspectives, some are unique and some are similar, so philosophy helps to understands moral values of people. So for literature history and philosophy both are important.

(4) Briefly explain inductive method with illustration of Shakespeare's Hamlet's Grave Digger's scene.

=> Inductive method is about Specific to general. Through the specific understanding we get conclusion of understanding. Example is grave digging scene in Hamlet, Ophelia is dead and both grave diggers digging the grave. This scene is perticular, specific scene in the Hamlet. Both digging the grave for them it is routine work, that's why for them there is no pain, no sadness. Because routine works brings a changes in their character. They know the ultimate truth, they talking about life. So this scene is specific but their understanding connects in larger structure  is general structure.

(5) Briefly explain deductive method with reference to an analogy to Music, Painting, rhythm and pattern. Give examples of the outcome of deductive method.
=> Deductive method is about general to specific. People have different area of interest that's why choices are different and people have different mind set that's why it depends on human beings. Time by time everything is changing and past becomes trend and present becomes past at a time. Poeple express their emotions, feelings through art. And music and painting both are part of art. Music follows rhythm. Rhythm and sound is a part of music. painting is art of picture. Through the different colours, it creates a picture of life. Sometimes some music and rhythm have deep meaning, so it creates a image. And sometimes some music does not creates image because it is shallow level. Some painting gives deep meaning, but some painting does not gives any meaning. In past time history remains through the different painting. It gives a some knowledge about past. So painting, music are tool to keep past and present situation. Music have also different genere and painting also have different genere, so both are connected with art. So art is general. And music and painting becomes perticular part.

(6) Refer to the Indian seasonal grid (below). If you can, please read small Gujarati or Hindi or English poem from the archetypal approach and apply Indian seasonal grid in the interpretation.

=>

In India main three season are there and these three seasons also divided into two another part.

(1) શિયાળો - Winter Season
1. હેમંત ઋતુ
2. શિશિર ઋતુ

(2) ઉનાળો - Summer Season
1. વસંત ઋતુ
2. ગ્રીષ્મ ઋતુ

(3) ચોમાસુ - Monsoon Season
1. શરદ ઋતુ
2. વર્ષા ઋતુ

In this poem poet describes the season and also talks about the ability of poet. Poet needs a sense to connect past with present, and present with past. So here poet said In Autumn, thinks about summer and in summer, thinks about Autumn, then become Poet. Poet needs deep sense of understanding. In this poem poet talks about that sense of deep meaning. One situation is there and thinks about another situation, another steps is necessary. Feel the pain, understanding the pain, situation, condition, feelings, emotions, behaviour is necessary. Deep understanding of things is necessary. Compare happiness with pain. Happiness is there and then another step is sadness is there. Both connect with each other. It is a cycle. So In this poem through the season poet talks about human condition.
